At the same time, some critics point to the slow pace of implementation of previous commitments. For example, the promise to provide all communities with safe drinking water by 2021 has not yet been fully fulfilled—28 water systems remain on alert as of early 2025.
Nevertheless, constructive dialogue is taking place. In January 2025, the first Joint Council on Self-Governance was held, where federal officials and community leaders agreed on common criteria for assessing progress.
The strategy also takes into account the recommendations of the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, including the integration of history education into school curricula nationwide.
While the path to full equality is long, the updated strategy demonstrates a systemic and respectful approach to restoring relationships based on the recognition of the rights and dignity of Indigenous peoples.
